Bookkeeper and Office Manager Job Description

Keweenaw Community Forest Company (KCFC) is a Michigan non-profit corporation and 501(c)(3) public charity based with a primary focus on protecting the natural habitats of Keweenaw. Incorporated in 2003, KCFC owns and manages wilderness, wetland and working forest properties in Keweenaw County, sponsors and conducts natural science research and education, manages preserved lands for other organizations and sponsors Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition (KORC). KCFC is seeking a qualified person to serve as office manager and bookkeeper. The position is initially parttime with potential to grow to a full time position.

Office Location:
5269 Gratiot Lake Road, Mohawk, MI 49950, by September 2026.
(This new office location is at Gratiot Lake although the USPS address is Mohawk.)
Job is in the office unless tasks are approved for remote completion.
Part Time:
Up to 20 hours per week. Potential to grow to a full time position.
Schedule:
Monthly Payroll must be run within a few days of month end; Otherwise, flexible hours as long as monthly bookkeeping and record keeping tasks are completed on a timely basis each month.
Reports to:
President of KCFC
Vacations/Time off:
Flexible for vacations and personal days.
Schedule vacations with President with 30 days’ notice.
KCFC does not expect staff to work on Federal Holidays.
KCFC policy is that everyone is off from December 24 – January 2 each year.
Hourly Pay:
Commensurate with experience. Minimum for the right person is $25/hour.

KCFC will fund approved training courses and career development conferences.
Requirements:
Proficient in QuickBooks Desktop.
Proficient with Apple Computers running Windows.
Strong bookkeeping skills.
Proficient with monthly reconciliations for bank accounts and investment accounts.
Strong attention to detail and able to maintain complete electronic and paper records (audit trail).
Knowledgeable about accounting and able to produce management reports and analysis.
Proficient in Word and Excel.
Professional, timely and clear verbal and written communication skills. Transparent when issues arise.
Self-motivated and able to work independently.
Strong team player. Ability to work effectively with the KCFC team and a variety of individuals/organizations when required.
Desirable Skills:
Accounting Education.
Strong aptitude for technology.
Prior experience with Gusto payroll services.
Prior experience with systems including Sales Force, Donor Box, Stripe, PayPal, Affinity.
Prior experience with company financial audits and record keeping.
Prior grant administration experience.
Ability to update company websites.
Knowledge of and interest in environmental and natural sciences.
Knowledge of real estate transactions, deeds, conservation easements.
Experience with annual financial audits.
Desire to grow in this position.
Job Duties:
Manage time reporting collection, approval and run monthly payroll through Gusto.
Enter financial transaction for 3 separate companies into QuickBooks each month.
Reconcile 4 checking accounts each month end.
Reconcile 5 investment accounts each month end.
Maintain a complete paper audit trail for 3 companies, one with 2 divisions.
Prepare monthly financial reporting for each company each month.
Assist with organizing old records in the new office.
Assist with grant writing and grant administration.
Assist with project administration and billing when requested.
Prepare special reporting and analyses for President and Board of Directors when requested.
Work with President when requested to develop reports and analyses.
