Forester and Land Manager Job Description

Keweenaw Community Forest Company (KCFC) is a Michigan non-profit corporation focused on conservation land management, forestry, natural science research, and outdoor recreation primarily on the Keweenaw Peninsula. KCFC manages over 20,000 acres primarily for conservation.

KCFC is seeking a fulltime professional forester and land manager to manage and monitor existing land under several different protocols and to help KCFC acquire more land. This position reports to the President. Flexible schedule options. Compensation commensurate with experience.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a Michigan Registered Forester.

  • Have 3-5 years of professional forester work experience with industry, state, or federal agencies

  • Have excellent knowledge of GIS and GPS tools including mapping software such as ArcMap, ArcPro, etc.

  • Proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Have proficiency with one or more forestry timber analysis systems.

  • Have demonstrated proficiency writing Commercial Forest Management Plans and Stewardship Plans.

  • Have experience with timber sale set ups, timber marking and managing timber sales.

  • Be self-motivated, self-directed and have good time management skills.

  • Have high energy and physical fitness for outdoor work in remote locations. 50% or more of the work is outdoors in all seasons.

  • Have excellent documentation and record keeping skills.

  • Be open-minded and a quick study to learn different land management requirements and develop and apply suitable monitoring protocols.

  • Be flexible, willing to take direction and pursue to new approaches.

  • Be ready and willing to work collaboratively on project teams with scientists and contractors.

  • Have a commitment to work safety.

Additional desirable criteria:

  • 4-year college degree

  • Experience documenting and monitoring biological baselines - Botany knowledge/experience in the Great Lakes region

  • Personal equipment to reach remote locations

  • Business, accounting, and financial analysis skills

  • Knowledge of Michigan commercial forest, hunting and fishing laws and regulations - Experience with EGLE and DNR permits for roads, stream crossings, etc.

  • Knowledge of Great Lakes region wildlife and migratory birds

  • Basic carpentry skills

  • Photography skills and game camera experience
